Sundays have become my favourite day of the week—not just because it’s a day off, but because it’s the day I reset our home and set the tone for the entire week ahead. If you’re juggling a busy family life, you know how quickly things can spiral into chaos. Toys scattered, laundry piling up, and that nagging feeling that the house is never quite calm. I’ve found that dedicating a little time on Sunday to reset our space makes a huge difference in how peaceful and cosy our home feels all week long.

I want to share with you the 10 essential Sunday reset tips that keep our home calm, organized, and inviting. These are practical, easy to follow, and perfect for involving the whole family—even the kids! Plus, I’ll share a free Weekly Reset Guide you can download to help you get started.

Let's delve into those 10 essential Sunday reset tips

1. Start with a Quick Declutter Session

Before diving into cleaning, I spend about 15-20 minutes decluttering the main living areas. This means putting away stray toys, clearing off kitchen counters, and sorting through any mail or papers that have accumulated. The goal is to create a clean slate.

Tip: Make it a game for the kids. Set a timer and challenge them to pick up as many toys or books as they can before the buzzer. It turns tidying into fun and teaches responsibility.

2. Do a Laundry Reset

Laundry can easily take over a family home. On Sunday, I gather all the laundry, sort it, and start washing the essentials—like school uniforms, towels, and bedding. Folding and putting away clean clothes right away prevents piles from building up.

Tip: Assign each child a laundry basket and have them help fold their own clothes. It’s a great way to teach independence and lighten your load.

3. Plan and Prep Meals for the Week

Meal planning saves so much stress during busy weekdays. On Sunday, I sit down with my family and plan dinners for the week. Then, I prep ingredients or even cook some meals in advance.

Tip: Get the kids involved by letting them choose one meal or help with simple prep tasks like washing veggies or setting the table.

4. Create a Cozy Atmosphere with Lighting and Scents

A calm home feels cozy and inviting. I like to light a few candles or use essential oil diffusers with calming scents like lavender or vanilla. Soft lighting in the evening also helps everyone wind down.

Tip: Let the kids pick their favourite scent or candle holder to make it a family ritual.

5. Organise the Entryway

The entryway is the first thing you see when you come home, so keeping it tidy sets a positive tone. I make sure shoes are lined up, coats are hung, and backpacks are ready for Monday.

Tip: Use labelled bins or hooks for each family member to keep things organised and easy to find.

6. Tidy Up Bedrooms Together

Bedrooms can get messy fast, especially with kids. On Sunday, we spend 10-15 minutes tidying bedrooms—making beds, putting away clothes, and organizing toys.

Tip: Turn on some upbeat music and make it a team effort. Praise and small rewards like stickers can motivate kids to keep their rooms tidy.

7. Set Up a Family Command Center

Having a central spot for calendars, to-do lists, and important papers keeps everyone on the same page. I update our family planner on Sunday with appointments, school events, and activities.

Tip: Use colourful markers or stickers to make the calendar fun and easy to read for kids.

8. Clean High-Traffic Areas Thoroughly

I focus on cleaning the kitchen, living room, and bathrooms on Sunday. Vacuuming, wiping surfaces, and cleaning sinks and toilets make the home feel fresh.

Tip: Break the tasks into small chunks and assign each family member a specific area to clean.

9. Refresh Linens and Towels

Fresh linens and towels add to that cosy feeling. I change bed sheets and replace used towels with clean ones on Sunday.

Tip: Let kids choose their favourite pillowcases or towel colours to make this task more enjoyable.

10. Wind Down with a Family Activity

After all the tidying and prepping, we spend Sunday evening together doing something relaxing—like playing a board game or watching a movie. It’s the perfect way to enjoy the calm we’ve created.

Tip: Rotate who picks the activity each week to keep everyone engaged.

Getting Kids Involved Makes All the Difference

One of the biggest challenges with Sunday resets is getting the kids to help without turning it into a battle. Here’s what works for us:

  • Make it fun: Use timers, music, and games to keep energy up.

  • Give clear roles: Assign simple, age-appropriate tasks.

  • Offer praise: Celebrate their efforts with positive words or small rewards such as a sticker chart.

  • Lead by example: Kids follow what they see, so join in enthusiastically.
